Bashundhara chief sent to jail
Bashundhara Group Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan alias Shah Alam
A Dhaka court on Sunday sent Bashundhara Group Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan alias Shah Alam to jail in a tax evasion case, in which he was sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment in absentia. The court however granted bail to Shah Alam in three graft cases filed by Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
Judge (in-charge) Kader Newaz of the Special Judge Court-3 passed the order after Shah Alam surrendered before it and sought bail in the cases.
On September 30, 2007, an anti-graft tribunal handed down eight-year imprisonment to Shaha Alam for dodging tax.
Kabiruddin Mollah, deputy tax commissioner of Circle-8 of the National Board of Revenue (NBR), filed the case against Shah Alam in connection with evading Tk 8.48 crore income tax between the fiscal years 2004 and 2007.
